The Story of Georgetown, Massachusetts Georgetown was originally settled in 1639 as a part of the town of Rowley but it took until 1838 for the town to break from Rowley and become “Georgetown” It is said the town was not specifically involved in the King Philip’s War but it fell victim to Indian raids. As the US began the industrialized movement Georgetown had small mills and a shoe factory however, it was primarily, as it is today a residential community and a distant suburb of Boston.

The urban design is similar to town developed during the late 1800s and early 1900s as they built upon the rotary that was established form framing corridors. This town, too, has five transportation corridors that are “Routes” and all intersect at the rotary in the center of town, allowing for easy town crossings in any direction. The neighborhoods have then settled between these corridors and are suburban in nature.

Georgetown utilizes the town meeting form of government, and is led by a board of selectmen and a town executive secretary. Georgetown has a police department, a fire department with two branches in the main villages, two post offices, a public works department and a library, which is located within the town hall.

Several options exist for commuters out of and into Georgetown, MA via car. The town has several transportation corridors that run through the town…Route 133 crosses the town as well as Route 97 and both are a short drive from the center of town.  Interstate 95 (I-95) is the closest and offers 1 access points

Mass transit does not exist however, the Newburyport/Rockport Line of the MBTA Commuter Rail passes through neighboring Rowley and Ipswich which is a short drive.  MBTA Commuter Rail  train stops in Newburyport and offers 814 parking spots terminating in Boston at North Station (60 minute ride).

The lots are smaller than other surrounding communities and the two also shares open space adjacent in neighboring towns such as the Boxford State Forrest and Cranes Beach in Ipswich.
